How to Overcome SEO issues by using WordPress Blogs?

WordPress is an amazing CMS platform that best supports all types of sites/blogs. Today many designers prefer only WordPress for its exceptional quality. Like other CMS WordPress too comes with many plugins and theme. Sometimes these plugins and theme may cause some visible/invisible damages to your site which may affect your site’s SEO. This article explains about such SEO issues and tips to overcome it.

  1. Change Your Permalink Structure

In WordPress, permalink structure means the URL structure. The default structure of permalink looks odd in WordPress like “default.com/?p=231” which will be confusing for both search engines and users. So you can modify it as “default.com/title-of-the-post/?” to make it easy to understand. You can easily do it by logging on to your WordPress Admin interface and modifying it under Settings>>Permalinks.

But modifying permalink will change your existing links and the links that have search engine index will not point correct post. So you have to use 301 redirect to your old posts which will redirect them to new ones. For sites with fewer posts, you can use 301 redirect through .htaccess file whereas for sites with many posts, plugins like Change Permalink Helper will be better.

Its better to edit permalink manually and make sure to use only lower case and also avoid special characters (even space) which will be highly considered by Google.

  1. Avoid Using Blog Title as H1 Tag on All Pages

Usually many themes tag the Blog title as h1 tag on all pages of the site which should be strictly avoided. Since Google uses this h1 tag to determine the type of your site, you should use h1 tag in

  • Your site name on homepage
  • Title of the page
  • The Category/Tag title

Using WordPress 3.0 will not have any such issues. But you have to check whether your blog title is tagged as h1 tag on all pages when you use custom theme/old version of WordPress. If you find such issues, you can use conditional tags to resolve it.

<code><?php if (is_front_page()) { ?>

<h1><a href=”<?php echo home_url(); ?>/” title=”<?phpbloginfo( ‘name’ ); ?>” rel=”home”><?phpbloginfo( ‘name’ ); ?></a></h1>

<?php } else { ?>

<div><a href=”<?php echo home_url(); ?>/” title=”<?phpbloginfo( ‘name’ ); ?>” rel=”home”><?phpbloginfo( ‘name’ ); ?></a></div>

<?php } ?></code>

The WordPress function “is_front_page()” is used to find the homepage to add blog title as h1 tag. For other pages, div tags are used.

  1. Allow Categories/Tags to be Indexed

Tag and Category archives are important source of inbound traffic. So make sure that your category/title tag uses h1. You can also add descriptions for Tags and Categories which helps you to have internal links to your web pages.

  1. Use Suitable SEO Plugins

Use all in one SEO plugin like Yoast which helps you to add things like Facebook OpenGraph, sitemaps, breadcrumbs, rel=”next” and rel=”prev” for paginated archives etc. This plugin will take care of everything if you configure it correctly.

You can use tools like Pingdom or Yslow to check your WordPress site’s performance. To enhance your site speed, use W3 Total Cache plugin to load your pages faster by caching them or use Better WordPress Minify which will reduce your CSS and JavaScripts.

  1. Optimise Your Images

Images added with the posts should be well optimised. In WordPress, you can add alt text, caption and description to your images.

  1. Link Your Google Author Profile to Your Site

You can easily add link of your Google+ Page to your site by using Yoast SEO plugin. Just log on to your profile and create backlink to your Google+ profile with “?rel=author tag”.

Go to WP Admin>>Users>>Your Profile>>About Yourself>>Biographical Info

Here you have to include a short profile about you and then you have to install HTML in Author Bio plugin. Next you have to include a reciprocal link from Google+ profile to the site by modifying the Contributer To section on Google+ profile. Finally you have to use Google’s tool to check whether your profile description is shown in all your posts.

  1. Add Schema.org Mark Up

Snippet data is the small descriptions about your site that are shown in the search results. Use plugins like Schema Creator by Raven to add good snippet data to your post/site which supports mark ups like

  • Person
  • Product
